the last code -- DOM manipulation after caching innerHTML, does not work, cause it dose pass the value to innerHTML of the operated element.

Like zechau said, the last one doesn't work. The only thing you're doing is appending text to a string. No DOM manipulation at all.. No wonder is quicker.
